HDI’s Sports Diplomacy Program in the West Bank and Jerusalem February 17-25, 2023 – Building Confidence and Self-esteem Among Girls Through Boxing

The Humpty Dumpty Institute (HDI) works around the world to inform and foster dialogue amongst critical stakeholders on key global issues. We do this through our programs with the U.S. Congress and the United Nations, engaging young people, supporting cultural and sports diplomacy, and working on humanitarian programs. HDI employs sports diplomacy to promote dialogue. We collaborate with U.S. Embassies and Consulates to bring American culture and sports to countries worldwide.

The U.S. team was a diverse team of experienced U.S. Boxing Fighters/Trainers composed of Mr. Tibor Juhasz, Ms. Melissa X St Vil, Ms. Raquel “Rocky” Harris, and Ms. Ronica Jeffrey.  The team conducted a three-day clinic first at the alFahed Sports Academy in Ramallah and then at the Arab Sports Center in Jerusalem.  There was also a virtual program for girls in Gaza who were unable to attend the program in person.  The clinics were inclusive and had girls and young women from villages, cities, and refugee camps.  The program worked with more than 300 girls and was modeled after a High-Level Training Camp.

The girls remained together for the program, which included cardiovascular training, core exercises, weight training, and stretching. Each day started with a boxing class that reviewed biographies, boxing styles, and training of the greatest American boxers in history, including Muhammed Ali and Claressa Maria Shields.

The classes included lessons on moral responsibility, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-control, and discipline that the sport requires.  After the daily training, the program finished with a communal fun activity designed as a fun and communal way to wrap up the day, reflect on lessons learned, and create relationships among the girls and the U.S. trainers.

HDI is committed to advancing U.S. foreign policy goals, including creating strong people-to-people ties between Americans and Palestinians and fostering conditions conducive to gender equity and a greater understanding of non-violent conflict resolution. From February 18 to February 24, 2023, HDI organized a sports diplomacy program focused on boxing to engage girls and young women in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and virtually in Gaza. HDI’s partner for this program was Palestine: Sports for Life.

HDI would like to thank the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Office of Palestinian Affairs for sponsoring this American sports diplomacy program and for its invaluable assistance.
