On April 21, 2016 the Humpty Dumpty Institute hosted a private reception for Hassan Sheikh Muhamud, the President of Somalia. President Muhamud was in New York for official meetings at the UN. Approximately 60 people, including policy makers from Washington, experts from the United Nations, and corporate leaders gathered at the home of Robert and Jennifer Diamond to meet the President and show support for his administration’s policies in rebuilding the nation of Somalia after two decades of failed statehood. President Muhamud spoke at length about the challenges he and his administration face in developing a vibrant democracy in a conflict zone, while at the same time advancing national reconciliation, anti-corruption measures and socioeconomic reforms. Under President Muhamud’s leadership, Somalia has also become a key participant in the fight against terrorism in the strategically important Horn of Africa. Somalia and the United States are working together to root out the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab, an Al Qaeda affiliate in that part of the world. |
Mr. Muhamud was elected President of Somalia in September 2012 and has forged a strong alliance with the United Stated government. He is committed to reviving the nation of Somalia and reestablishing diplomatic ties with the United States for the first time in 20 years. |
Prior to becoming president, Mr. Muhamud was a university Professor and Dean. He also worked in the non-profit sector and advised a number of NGOs working in Somalia.
In 2013 Time Magazine included the President on its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Dr. Khalafalla, HDI’s Chairman, introduced the President and said that it was “extremely important for the United States to help Somalia develop a democratic nation and to support the policies of President Muhamud.” The President and CEO of the Humpty Dumpty Institute, Ralph L. Cwerman, added that “it was incredibly significant for the United States and Somalia to continue working together to remove the threat of terrorism from the Horn of Africa and for the United States to assist President Muhamud in every way possible to let democracy prevail in Somalia.” |
