New York City, N.Y. - The Chairman of the Board of the Humpty Dumpty Institute, Dr. Al Khalafalla, will be presented an Honorary Doctorate in Science by Ahfad University for Women on Wednesday, April 27. Dr. Khalafalla is being honored for his commitment to promote education, health, social, and economic development for the people of Sudan, especially women.
Dr. Khalafalla has worked for the past six years with the private sector in Sudan, represented by the CTC Group, as well as with non-profit organizations. Working with the CTC Group, Dr. Khalafalla informs U.S. policy makers and the U.S. public about the unintended consequences of economic sanctions on the lives of ordinary Sudanese. In addition to health, education, and social development activities, Dr. Khalafalla’s work has focused on humanitarian assistance. The Board of Directors and the Congressional Advisory Board of the Humpty Dumpty Institute congratulate Dr. Khalafalla on this honor.
The Ahfad University for Women is the oldest accredited university in Sudan and one of very few institutions of higher learning in Africa focused solely on women’s education. The Ahfad experience embraces a combination of well articulated academic courses, on-the-job training, individual research, and community extension activities. This combination of activities is designed to prepare women from all parts of Sudan to become change agents in their families and communities and to assume leadership positions in society.
Al Khalafalla was appointed the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Humpty Dumpty Institute in 2015 after serving for two years as a Director of HDI. Prior to joining HDI, Dr. Khalafalla held numerous leadership and board positions. These include President of American Global Institute (AGI), President of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Institute of Peace and IBN Cultural Center, and Vice Chair of A More Perfect Union at the University of Richmond. In addition, he served/serves on a number of the boards of educational institutions in Virginia.
Dr. Khalafalla is an advocate for intercultural dialogue. He received a prestigious Humanitarian Award from the Governor of Virginia in 2009 for his international humanitarian endeavors and his humanitarian and interfaith initiatives have been recognized by the University of Louisiana, the Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Bahrain, and the University of Richmond. On October 22nd, 2012, Dr. Khalafalla was honored by the U.S. Congress for organizing a successful Congressional Delegations to the Middle East which increased dialogue and engagement in this strategically important region. Most recently, he led the first private U.S. Congressional delegation to Sudan in more than 20 years.
Dr. Khalafalla earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Louisiana, an MBA from University of Maryland System, and a PhD in Public Policy and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is married and has two children.
