April 19, 2011
On Tuesday, April 19, Albany State University, in conjunction with The Humpty Dumpty Institute’s Higher Education Alliance for the United Nations (HEA), hosted its final lecture of the semester on “UN Support to Elections and the Wider Democratic Process”. The distinguished presenter invited to campus was Andrew Bruce, Political Officer in the Electoral Assistance Division of the Department of Political Affairs of the UN. Some notable distinctions in Mr. Bruce’s background include serving as a member of the European Commission election team and as Election Advisor for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
Andrew Bruce discussed how the UN handles requests from member states for electoral assistance, filtering them to the appropriate office or program, and maintaining working relationships with these countries. Mr. Bruce received many insightful questions from the ASU audience and went over the allotted time given for questions. Many students stayed after the presentation to personally meet Mr. Bruce and hear more about the electoral process. The Higher Education Alliance and Albany State University were honored to close this year’s program by hosting a speaker with such invaluable global insights.
