Albany State University Hosts the Venerable
Miao Hong for a Discussion on “Buddhism 101”

On Thursday, April 19, Albany State University, in conjunction with The Humpty Dumpty Institute’s Higher Education Alliance for the United Nations (HEA), hosted its final lecture of the semester on “Buddhism 101”. The distinguished presenter invited to campus was the Venerable Miao Hong, Faculty at the University of the West and a nun in the Fo Guang Shan (aka: International Buddhist Progress Society). Venerable Miao Hong has served in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in Australia, Houston, Texas, and New York City for both the International Buddhist Progress Society (IBPS) and Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA). Specifically, the Venerable Miao Hong served as BLIA’s official representative to the United Nations where she directed BLIA’s accreditation to the Economic and Social Council, and represented the work of BLIA to a variety of UN agencies and non-governmental organizations.
The Venerable Miao Hong gave students a basic understanding of Buddhist concepts, practices, history, beliefs and traditions as practiced by various schools of thought. She also discussed how the tenets of Humanistic Buddhism benefit society through the promotion of education, raising gender equality, and providing medical services and emergency relief.
